The thumb and index finger take the majority of the weight while the other three fingers assist you to hold the mallet lightly.
The thumb is placed in the sling, which supports the back of the hand, and the index finger operates like a pistol finger, in a way which avoids taking a hammer grip. The little finger is flush with the bottom of the handle.
