On August 1st, horses from the Southern Hemisphere celebrate their birthday; it is celebrated on January 1st in the Northern Hemisphere. Originally, it only applied to race horses because horses are categorized according to age. Furthermore, their names start with a letter of the alphabet that changes on January 1st every year. Therefore, breeders used to plan births around January 1st (or August 1st in the Southern Hemisphere).
